Ocker Quiz #5

Hey Gang.

Back from a great week in the Victoria countryside. I'll recount my tale of the Great Ocean Road, the Grampian Mountains and Mt. Arapilies tomorrow. For today, boggle your brain with the next Ocker Quiz.

The above photo depicts the Australian Coat of Arms, rendered in metal above the entrace to Parliament House in Canberra.

What is unique about the Australian Coat of Arms?

(in general, not just the particular Coat of Arms in the photo)

Thism version of the coat of arms is the 1908 version that by law can be retained on gov't buildings. It also seems to be similar to the south wales state coat.
Unofficially it also means that at this location one can find an audi tt dealer.

It features an emu? That seems pretty unique to me. I just learned from wikipedia that emus have large, multi-folded nasal passages.

Is this answer appropriately G-rated for your blog, Scott? I noticed that you awarded me a point for my last answer but then omitted me from the overall ratings. Whatup with that?

Maybe you mean the curious tidbit that both the kangaroo and emu are featured on the coat of arms despite neither being an "official" national animal of Australia.

Not really related to your quiz but perhaps equally interesting is the old unofficial coat of arms of Western Australia developed by settlers in the Swan River colony. It featured two red kangaroos and a pun in Latin, "Cygnis Insignis" (Distinguished for Swans). Presumably Queen Liz II was not a fan of puns as the coat of arms now carries no motto...

First, using the "information super-highway" to research for the Okcer quiz is lame beyond comment. I don't want to cloud my answer with a bunch of "facts."

The obvious answer is you don't need a coat on your arms because Austrailia is a big desert where the natives barely wear clothing to begin with.

It's the kangaroo and emu - because they're probably some of the few vegetarian animals featured on a coat of arms.

Hey, I know. You can eat them! You can't do that with the British Coat of Arms, although I'd love to know what Unicorn tastes like.

Actually, the real answer is neither of the animals can walk backwards. It's meant to be about moving forwards or something symbolic like that.

Do I win?
